Lorraine Elizabeth Bailey was the second child of two born to Henry Lawrance "Laurie" and Elizabeth "Dulcie" Bailey. She was born in Pinelands, Cape, on 17th February, 1934. She was educated at Rustenburg Girls' High School, Rondebosch, where she matriculated in 1950. During herschool years she was also a piano student at the South African College of Music, as she had won a bursary to study there when she was ten years old. She matriculated with music as one of her subjects, and intended going to the University of Cape Town to further her music studies, but when in her matric year her father learnt that he was being sent to England for six months by the company he worked for, The BritishGeneral Electric Company. He told her that she had a choice - eitherto go to University or go overseas with her parents to travel for sixmonths. She decided to go overseas, and this turned out to be the beginning of the best education, by travelling, that anybody could receive. In England and Scotland she met many relatives who she had heard so much about, and they were delightful people. When she returned fromoverseas she attended a Commercial College in Cape Town and eventually became a confidential legal secretary.
